The sales funnel is a model of the process that prospective customers go through to
move from becoming aware of your product or service to making a purchase and
becoming a loyal customer. Each stage in the sales funnel requires different content,
messaging and tactics to maximize conversions. By understanding these steps,
businesses can discover possible customer loss points and adjust their marketing
strategies accordingly.
The top of the sales funnel, referred to as awareness, is all about attracting new
customers to your business. Depending on your business model, this can be
achieved through marketing efforts such as advertising, cold emailing and social
media. Prospects are looking for solutions to their problems at this stage and will
evaluate the potential of your product or service to address those issues. The key at
this stage is to provide relevant, educational content that demonstrates your
knowledge of the problem and how you would address it. This will make you a
trusted advisor to the prospect and help them decide to take action.
Prospects who are at the awareness stage have demonstrated an interest in your
company, brand or products and have determined that your product may be a good
fit for them. At this point, you should be able to convert them from visitors to leads
by offering discounts, exclusive offers or a free trial period. This will motivate them
to move on from being a lead and become a paying customer.
Once you have converted a lead to a paying customer, the focus shifts from
converting them as quickly as possible to retaining them for as long as they are a
customer. This can be done through retargeting advertisements, email
communications that offer additional discounts and education materials that
demonstrate how your product or service will continue to benefit the customer.
A sales funnel is an essential tool for any business, and a strong digital strategy can
be the difference between converting customers at all stages of your sales process
or not converting them at all. By focusing on each stage of your sales funnel and
taking the time to understand what your customers want, need and expect from
your business, you can create a strategy that will work for them and increase your
conversions.
